Ahead of Global Debut, Design Patent Filed by VinFast

On April 30, 2026, a design patent was filed by Vietnam auto brand VinFast for its forthcoming electric maxi-scooter called Rasad in India. With this filing of a design patent, the possibility of VinFast’s electric maxi-scooter in the Indian E2W market in late 2026 has become high. As per the media reports, VinFast will launch its first vehicle in the Indian market in late 2026.

Main features of design patent filed by VinFast include:

  • Chunky tires wrapped around 14-inch alloy wheels
  • Disk brakes on both front and rear end
  • Telescopic front fork along with twin rear shock absorbers
  • Spacious stepped seat
  • Rectangular digital instrument cluster along with wide handlebar
  • Front mounted charger port and storage space under the seat

This scooter styling is heavily influenced by petrol maxi-scooters such as the Yamaha Aerox 155 and Honda ADV160. Making the Rasad the high-end version of an electric scooter.

Expected Performance and Specifications

Though VinFast has not confirmed the Rasad's specifications for the Indian market yet, industry reports in Vietnam indicate that:

  • Centrally located electric motor rated at around 7.1 kW peak power
  • Claimed maximum speed of about 100 km/h
  • Belt transmission from a mid-positioned motor
  • Estimated battery pack of about 4 to 5 kWh using LFP battery cells
  • A potential range of 150-200 km when tested in India

The above figures suggest that the Rasad could be among the fastest electric scooters in the Indian market without having to switch to petrol scooters.

Launch Timetable and India Plans

VinFast has already declared its plans to launch electric scooters in India in 2026. With three scooters from its range in Vietnam being identified as those to be launched. The filing of a patent for the Rasad prior to its unveiling indicates that this scooter can also be included in this list.

But VinFast has not yet:

  • Declared whether the Rasad will also launch in India
  • Given any launch date for India
  • Announced the pricing and battery packs of the scooter for the Indian market

VinFast’s first batch of electric scooters is expected to hit the Indian market around late 2026. Rasad's international commercial release will be planned around Q4 2026.

Price Projections and Targeted Markets

Initial projections peg the price of the Rasad around ₹2.3 to 2.5 lakh in India. Depending on the battery type, features, and applicable taxes in India. At this price point, the Rasad will be able to:

  • Be cheaper than some luxury petrol scooters upfront
  • Have low running costs
  • Attract those urban commuters who prioritize performance and style over everything else
  • It will increase the competition for established brands like Ola Electric, Ather Energy, and Chetak, particularly within the segment of high-speed electric scooters.

ELCTRIK Speaks

The patent application for the Rasad in India by VinFast is not just another formality. Rather, it shows the company's intention to create its niche in the premium electric two-wheeler market. As per the speculations about specifications and pricing of the Rasad. The company may come up with an electric scooter which petrol maxi-scooter brands and even existing competitors would find difficult to compete with. The challenge for VinFast will lie in localization, setting up of service centers and price strategy in order to capture Indian customers who have been hesitant in adopting performance electric scooters thus far.
