Performance at the Brand Level

  • Tata Motors: Tata Motors maintained its leadership in the segment of electric four-wheelers. Selling 13,158 EVs in August 2026. It is 63.17% YoY higher compared to August 2025.
  • Mahindra & Mahindra: Mahindra maintained second position with 6,464 electric units in August 2026, which is 56.17% YoY higher. The growth was supported by healthy demand from XEV 9e and e6 SUVs. Besides continued demand for previously launched electric vehicles in select regions.
  • JSW MG Motor India: MG Motor India logged a sales figure of 4622 electric units for August 2026, down by 17.79% year-over-year (YoY). This dip has been attributed to tough base comparisons and model-cycle effects. While MG India remains a prominent player in the electric vehicle (EV) segment, there is no denying the stiff competition it is facing from Tata and Mahindra and new entrants.
  • VinFast: VinFast turned out to be the highlight among the new entrants. Reaching the fourth place with 2,199 electric units sold in August 2026. The Indian market moved by this Vietnamese automobile company. Which focuses on the launch of compact and mid-size electric SUVs. Having grown by about 43.54% month-on-month, VinFast is out-selling Maruti Suzuki's electric offerings.
  • Maruti Suzuki: Electric car sales by Maruti Suzuki totaled 1,412 in August 2026, registering a minor decline MoM. Even though its monthly sales numbers for electric cars are still lagging VinFast, Maruti’s approach towards electrification is just at an early stage. Maruti’s strategy for EVs will be key to recapturing momentum in the electric passenger vehicle race.
  • Hyundai, Kia and BYD: The Korean marque Hyundai sold 803 electric cars in August 2026, up 17.06% YoY. While its sibling brand Kia sold 645 units, up 28.74% YoY. Both Korean brands use their updated electric car lineup and increased dealer support to expand off a low base. BYD India, which offers premium electric sedans and SUVs, delivered 543 units in August 2026.
  • Luxury and niche vehicles: Sales of BMW India's electric four-wheeler stood at 273 units. Showing a substantial decline from the previous year. Whereas those of Mercedes-Benz' electric cars were at 113 units, registering marginal growth. India's Tesla operations, although relatively new, have accounted for 111 units in August 2026.

ELCTRIK Speaks

August 2026 highlights the electric four-wheelers market in India. It has already crossed the phase of early adoption and has achieved multiple brands growth. Wherein Tata and Mahindra are the trendsetters, and VinFast and others are competing with them. The high number of 30,548 units sold per month indicates. That demand for the segment is now wide and no longer restricted to a few flagships. OEMs need to quickly come up with their strategy for electric vehicles because otherwise they will be confined to the edges.
