Market Snapshot
- Total e2W retail sales (Aug 2026): 1,73,270 units
- YoY growth: ~74.15%
- MoM trend: 9.86% decline MoM from record sales in July 2026, largely due to seasonal effect.
- EV penetration: Overall EV retail penetration crossed 12% in August 2026, with two-wheelers leading in absolute numbers.
The leading four brands – TVS, Bajaj, Ather, and Hero Vida combined together – comprised nearly three-fourths of all e2W shipments, implying fast consolidation among established OEMs with good distribution networks and products pipelines.
Brand-wise Performances
- TVS Motors: TVS continued to dominate with approximately 48,938 units. Accounting for around 26-27% market share and 90.82% YoY growth. TVS enjoys growth on account of its popular iQube series of models.
- Bajaj Auto (Chetak): Bajaj occupied the second spot with around 41,114 units. Registered an impressive 235.73% YoY growth rate starting from a very low base in August 2025. The Chetak lineup has received an increased number of models and sharper pricing.
- Ather Energy: The company ranked third with sales figures of around 28,757 units growing by around 49.70% YoY. The demand comes from the Rizta family scooter, and the relevance of the 450 model range.
- Hero MotoCorp (Vida): The volume of Hero Vida stood at around 19,007 units growing by 38.04% YoY. The performance of the brand is driven by expanding portfolio, improved after-sales network through the existing channels of Hero.
- Ola Electric: Ola Electric delivered sales of around 13.852 units falling by 28.83% YoY. The brand struggles with stiff competition from TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Vida as well as issues related to quality and service perception.
- Other Notable Players: Apart from these top five players, brands like Ampere (Greaves Electric), River, Bgauss, Kinetic Green, and various regional OEMs make up the other volumes. Though on a smaller scale individually, they together provide thousands of units and serve various segments including budget scooters.
Segment and Market Dynamics
- Scooters remain popular: Majority of the e2W sales are electric scooters owing to their convenience for urban commuting and family use.
- Motorcycles gaining importance: Electric motorcycles are slowly becoming popular as well. Among those consumers that require greater range and more traditional riding posture.
- Geography: Growth is becoming more diverse with increasing contribution coming from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Driven by improved financing, awareness, and infrastructure for charging/service support.
- Seasonality: August generally faces softer demand due to the lull after an effort through June-July. Which explains the MoM decline from the record high in July, but still 67% YoY growth indicates the demand to be robust.
ELCTRIK Speaks
The data for August 2026 reveals that the electric two-wheelers segment in India has reached the stage of mass adoption. TVS and Bajaj emerge as strong duopolists in the top tier, while Ather and Hero Vida continue to grow consistently. The year-on-year decline in sales of Ola despite its status as one of the top five players highlights the significance of brand reputation. Consistency in quality of products, and after-sales services compared to early mover advantages.
