VinFast has submitted plans for a proposed Rs 7,000 crore expansion of its manufacturing facility in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. According to documents filed for environmental clearance, the company intends to expand the plant’s operations beyond electric passenger vehicles to include electric scooters and electric buses.

The proposed expansion is expected to increase the scale of the facility and diversify its manufacturing capabilities across multiple electric mobility segments.

Planned Capacity Increase Across Vehicle Segments

Under the proposed Phase II development, VinFast plans to raise annual production capacity to 200,000 electric cars, 1 million electric scooters, and 2,000 electric buses.

The expansion includes the addition of dedicated production lines, workshops, and testing infrastructure for the new vehicle categories. The company is also looking to strengthen its presence in India's broader electric mobility market through a more diversified product portfolio.

Existing Investment and Operations

VinFast began operations at its Tuticorin facility following its initial investment of approximately Rs 1,200 crore in the first phase of development. The 408-acre manufacturing complex currently has an annual production capacity of 50,000 electric cars.

The company has already introduced two locally assembled electric SUV models in the Indian market and has outlined plans to expand into additional electric vehicle segments.

Focus Beyond Passenger Vehicles

In December 2025, VinFast announced its intention to enter the electric bus, electric scooter, and charging infrastructure segments in India. The proposed Tuticorin expansion aligns with that broader strategy.

The move comes as electric two-wheelers continue to account for a significant share of India's EV sales, while electric buses are increasingly being deployed through state and central government-supported public transport initiatives.

Tamil Nadu Strengthens EV Manufacturing Base

The proposed expansion further adds to Tamil Nadu's position as a major automotive and electric vehicle manufacturing hub. The state hosts a large network of vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers, and export-oriented production facilities.

Several domestic and international automakers have expanded manufacturing operations in Tamil Nadu in recent years, supported by the state's established industrial ecosystem and logistics infrastructure.

Elctrik Speaks

VinFast's proposed investment highlights the growing interest among global EV manufacturers in India's two-wheeler and public transport segments. While passenger electric vehicles remain an important market, electric scooters and buses are emerging as key growth areas due to their higher adoption volumes and wider use cases. If approved and executed as planned, the expansion could further strengthen Tamil Nadu's role in India's electric vehicle manufacturing landscape.
