Uber Introduces New Driver Features in India, Including Flexible Passes and Safety Tools
Uber announced a new set of driver-focused features in India on October 29, 2026, at the third edition of Uber Pragati. The updates cover driver onboarding, payment options, subscription passes, safety support and additional earning opportunities.
The company said the changes are based on driver feedback and are intended to give drivers more flexibility in managing their work and accessing safety services.

Flexible Drive Passes and WhatsApp Onboarding
Uber has introduced Flexible Drive Pass, a subscription option that allows drivers to select passes ranging from six hours to 180 days. The options are intended for both part-time and full-time drivers.
Under Quickstart, drivers can join the platform through WhatsApp, allowing them to complete the onboarding process through a messaging service they already use.
The company has also introduced the 'Earn First, Pay Later' option for eligible drivers. Under this model, drivers can continue accepting cash trips after their
balance reaches zero, subject to an additional credit limit.
Uber has added voice notes to its in-app chat, allowing drivers to communicate with riders through audio messages. The updated Driver App also brings earnings, trip details and other updates together in one place.
Uber Expands Safety Features for Drivers and Riders
Uber has introduced several features covering emergency assistance, ride recording and in-app communication.
Ambulance Assistance
Through Uber's 24x7 Safety Line, developed in partnership with Dial 4242, drivers and riders can access ambulance assistance. According to the company, the service was used on 25 occasions in less than four months to help people access medical support following accidents.
Encrypted Ride Recordings
The Record My Ride feature allows encrypted video recordings of trips. Uber said the recordings have helped clarify a disputed incident involving a rider and a driver, with the footage assisting police in establishing the facts.
Safety Content Flag
Uber is introducing a feature that identifies potentially inappropriate language in chats and prompts riders to reconsider messages before sending them. Drivers receiving inappropriate messages can also cancel eligible trips without affecting their cancellation statistics, subject to the feature's applicable conditions.
The in-app Driver Safety Hub brings safety tools and support features together, including audio recording and trip-sharing options.
New Earning Opportunities for Bike Drivers
Uber is expanding earning options for bike drivers beyond passenger trips. Through Bike Intercity, drivers can take longer trips between cities, including routes such as Delhi–Meerut. Uber Direct allows bike drivers to complete delivery orders for businesses, while Uber Parcel enables users to send personal packages within cities.
The company has also introduced Uber Pet, which allows participating car drivers to accept trips from riders travelling with their pets. The programme adds another category of trips for drivers on the platform.
Uber's Operations in India
Uber began operations in India in 2013. The company said its services now operate across 125 cities, offering options that include bikes, autos, cars, intercity travel and parcel deliveries.
According to Uber, more than two million Indians earn income through its platform. The latest updates expand the available options for drivers while adding tools related to payments, communication and safety.
Aditya Kapoor, Director – Supply Operations, Uber India & South Asia, said, "Our ambition is to continue being the platform of choice for flexible earning opportunities in India. That means giving drivers the freedom to work on their own terms, the confidence of industry-leading safety protections and more ways to earn. We want to continue setting the benchmark for what drivers should expect from a platform."
Elctrik Speaks
Uber's latest updates focus on three areas: driver earnings, ease of access and safety. Flexible subscription passes and WhatsApp-based onboarding could make it easier for drivers to manage their work on the platform. Features such as ambulance assistance and encrypted ride recordings also address safety concerns faced by drivers and riders.
However, the impact of these changes will depend on how they work in practice. The flexibility offered by subscription passes, the conditions attached to credit-based payments and the accessibility of safety services will influence their usefulness for drivers. As ride-hailing platforms expand in India, driver earnings, operating costs and access to support will remain important factors in assessing these initiatives.
