Tesla is expected to introduce a new product in India on April 22. The Tesla Model 3 is the most likely addition, though other options remain under consideration.
At present, Tesla’s presence in India is limited to the Tesla Model Y. The model is imported as a fully built unit, which results in high import duties and elevated pricing. It is offered in two rear-wheel-drive variants and has seen relatively low volumes, with 225 units sold in 2025.
Pricing and Policy Context
Import duties continue to affect Tesla’s pricing strategy in India. Under the India–US trade framework announced in February 2026, duties on internal combustion engine vehicles are proposed to be reduced. However, electric vehicles are not included in this revision. This means Tesla’s cost structure remains unchanged for now.
Model 3 as the Likely Option
The Tesla Model 3 is the most probable addition to Tesla’s India portfolio. Positioned below the Model Y globally, it is expected to be offered at a relatively lower price point. Similar to the Model Y, it could be imported from China and offered in standard and long-range rear-wheel-drive versions.
Other Possible Options
Tesla could also consider introducing a different product to expand its visibility. The Tesla Cybertruck is one such possibility. In this case, it would likely serve as a limited-volume product aimed at increasing brand awareness rather than driving sales. The Tesla Model S and Tesla Model X are less likely to be introduced, as both models are nearing the end of their lifecycle globally.
What to Expect
Tesla has not made any official announcement so far. The company is expected to share details on April 22, which will clarify its next step in the Indian market.
Elctrik Speaks
Tesla’s next move in India is likely to focus on expanding its product range within existing constraints rather than addressing pricing challenges immediately.
