Ahmedabad-based electric vehicle company Matter has crossed 100 granted patents, while its total filings now exceed 400. These filings span multiple areas such as electric motors, battery systems, thermal management, transmission, and vehicle control software.

Technology Development and Focus Areas

The company has focused on addressing practical challenges in electric two-wheelers, including performance in high and low temperatures, drivetrain control, and energy efficiency. Its development approach combines mechanical systems, electronics, and software within a single platform.

Use in Commercial Product

These technologies are currently deployed in Matter’s electric motorcycle platform, AERA. During 2025, AERA users collectively covered more than 21 lakh kilometres across 1.37 lakh rides. The vehicles were used in a wide temperature range, from 3°C to 48°C, generating operational data such as over 56 lakh gear shifts.

Performance Data

As per company data, the AERA has achieved a top speed of 124 km/h and can accelerate from 0 to 60 km/h in 4.2 seconds. Reported riding range goes up to 182 km under regular usage conditions, with higher figures recorded under controlled testing.

Patent Pipeline and Coverage

Matter continues to expand its patent portfolio, with applications under review across areas such as motors, thermal systems, battery intelligence, and software-led vehicle control. The company has indicated a consistent rate of patents being granted from its filings.

Geared Powertrain System

One of the areas of development includes a geared electric powertrain, which differs from the single-speed systems commonly used in electric two-wheelers. This setup is aimed at offering better control and efficiency under varying riding conditions.

Industry Context

The increase in patent filings reflects a wider trend in India’s electric mobility sector, where companies are investing more in in-house technology and intellectual property development. Matter was also recognised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in 2024 for its patent portfolio.

Mohal Lalbhai, CEO, Matter, said, “Surpassing 100 granted patents demonstrates that India can lead in original EV innovation. We are not adapting existing platforms, but building technology that redefines how electric motorcycles perform, feel, and deliver value to riders.”

Kumar Prasad Telikapalli, CTO, Matter, added, “Our patents are not just engineering concepts; they power products that customers ride every day. The strong conversion from filings to grants reflects the depth of our engineering, and with a large IP pipeline ahead, we are only getting started. Through AIDV, we are building the next wave of mobility innovation that will further redefine the electric riding experience.”
