India’s electric passenger vehicle segment reported retail sales of 23,163 units in April 2026, reflecting a 73 percent increase compared to 13,409 units in April 2025. This marks the second-highest monthly sales after March 2026. A total of 17 manufacturers contributed to the overall volumes.
Tata Motors Maintains Leadership
Tata Motors recorded sales of 8,506 units, up 77 percent year-on-year from 4,816 units. The company held a 37 percent market share during the month. Models such as the Tata Harrier EV, Tata Nexon EV, Tata Tiago EV and Tata Punch EV contributed to volumes. The Tata Curvv EV is yet to reach higher sales levels. Despite leading monthly sales, the company’s overall EV market share declined in FY2026 due to increased competition.

Mahindra Ahead of MG for Second Month
Mahindra & Mahindra reported sales of 5,394 units in April 2026, a 63 percent increase over 3,301 units last year. It held a 24 percent market share.
The company’s EV lineup, including the Mahindra BE 6, Mahindra XEV 9e and Mahindra XEV 9S, contributed to its volumes. This is the second consecutive month where Mahindra’s sales exceeded MG.
MG Motor India in Third Position
JSW MG Motor India recorded 4,978 units, a 32 percent increase from 3,776 units in April 2025, with a 22 percent market share.
The MG Windsor EV remained a key contributor. Other models in its portfolio include the MG ZS EV, MG Comet EV, MG M9 and MG Cyberster.
VinFast and Maruti Cross 1,000 Units
VinFast reported 1,231 units, achieving a 5 percent market share. Its lineup includes the VinFast VF6, VinFast VF7 and VinFast VF MPV 7.
Maruti Suzuki sold 1,222 units of the Maruti e-Vitara, also reaching a 5 percent market share. Production allocation remains split between domestic and export markets.
Hyundai and BYD Report Mixed Trends
Hyundai Motor India recorded 512 units, a decline of 31 percent year-on-year. Its EV portfolio includes the Hyundai Creta Electric and Hyundai Ioniq 5.
BYD India sold 467 units, up 17 percent from last year. Its offerings include the BYD Atto 3, BYD Seal, BYD eMax 7 and BYD Sealion 7.
Kia, BMW and Mercedes-Benz Performance
Kia India reported 341 units, compared to 34 units in April 2025. The Kia Carens Clavis EV contributed to volumes, alongside the Kia EV6 and Kia EV9. BMW India sold 296 units, more than doubling its volumes year-on-year, maintaining its lead in the luxury EV segment. Mercedes-Benz India recorded 104 units, up 20 percent year-on-year. The Mercedes-Benz CLA Electric has received over 400 bookings.
