Hyundai Motor Company and TVS Motor Company have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to develop electric three-wheelers (E3Ws) for India and other markets. The agreement was announced on April 20, 2026, in Seoul and New Delhi. The collaboration follows the showcase of a concept vehicle at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025.
Roles and Responsibilities
Under the agreement, Hyundai Motor will lead the design and contribute its research and development capabilities. TVS Motor will support development using its electric vehicle platform and experience in the three-wheeler segment.

TVS Motor will also manage manufacturing and sales operations in India. The vehicles developed under this partnership are expected to cater to both domestic demand and export markets.
Focus on Local Manufacturing
Both companies plan to localize key components for the electric three-wheeler. Local sourcing and production are expected to support supply chains and reduce costs.
This approach is also intended to improve availability of spare parts and after-sales service within India.
Product Development and Use Cases
The electric three-wheeler will be developed for multiple applications, including passenger transport and goods movement. The concept shown earlier included features designed for Indian road and climate conditions, such as ground clearance adjustments and thermal management systems.
The vehicle will undergo testing and certification to meet regulatory requirements in India.
Market Context
India is currently one of the largest markets for three-wheelers, particularly in the last-mile mobility segment. The partnership aims to address this demand through an electric vehicle platform.
Sharad Mishra, President, Group Strategy, TVS Motor Company, said, “At TVS Motor Company, we aim to transform quality of life through sustainable and accessible mobility. The Joint Development Agreement marks an important step in our partnership with Hyundai Motor Company and advances our shared ambition to develop electric three-wheeler solutions. By bringing together complementary strengths - including our electric three-wheeler platform, engineering expertise, and deep understanding of customer needs - we are well-positioned to deliver purpose-built products for India and additional markets. This collaboration reinforces our commitment to scalable, sustainable last-mile mobility while setting new benchmarks in technology, quality, customer experience, and a legacy of trust."
“Hyundai Motor Company has long explored ways to contribute to improving India’s transportation environment as a key market, and our collaboration with TVS Motor is a strategic decision rooted in that effort. We hope the co-developed E3W enables broader access to safer and more sustainable transportation for people across the country.” – Joongsun Ko, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy & Planning at Hyundai Motor Company.
