Honda is preparing to expand its product lineup in India with multiple models planned by 2030. As part of this strategy, the company is expected to launch the Prelude in May. The model returned globally in its sixth generation after a gap of nearly two decades.

Honda Prelude: Platform and Dimensions

The Prelude is based on the same platform as the eleventh-generation Honda Civic. It measures 4,520 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width, and 1,355 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,605 mm. It has a ground clearance of 135 mm, which may affect usability on uneven roads. The coupe features a 2+2 seating layout, with limited space in the rear seats.

Honda Prelude: Powertrain Details

The model uses a two-motor hybrid system similar to the Civic e:HEV. It includes:

• A 2.0-litre petrol engine producing 104 kW (139 hp) and 182 Nm
• An electric traction motor producing 135 kW (181 hp) and 315 Nm

The setup combines engine and motor functions without a conventional gearbox and uses a system that simulates gear shifts.

Driving Features

The Prelude offers seven levels of regenerative braking controlled via steering-mounted paddles. It also includes a feature called ‘S+ Shift’, which allows the paddles to function like gear selectors. This system simulates upshifts and downshifts instead of using a traditional transmission.

Honda Prelude: Performance and Efficiency

The Honda Prelude accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and has a top speed of 188 km/h. In terms of efficiency, it delivers 23.6 km/l under Japan’s WLTC cycle and consumes 5.2 litres per 100 km as per the WLTP standard used in Europe. The hybrid coupe is equipped with a 40-litre fuel tank, translating to an estimated driving range of up to 944 km (WLTC) and 769 km (WLTP) on a full tank.

Manufacturing and Expected Price

Honda produces the Prelude at its Yorii plant in Japan, where the Honda Civic Type R is also manufactured.

The model is expected to be imported into India as a completely built unit (CBU), with an estimated price of around Rs. 75 lakh (ex-showroom).
