Greaves Electric Mobility has announced that it will introduce the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter in FY27, positioning it within the highly competitive sub-₹1 lakh segment. The company intends to target buyers who traditionally opt for petrol scooters by offering comparable performance along with the cost benefits of electric mobility.
Built to Address Entry-Level EV Performance Gaps
The upcoming scooter has been engineered to improve on performance areas where entry-level electric scooters typically fall short. According to the company, the Ampere 6th Gen model is expected to deliver higher torque than several high-selling petrol scooters in the same price category. This is aimed at enabling quicker acceleration and better load-carrying capability in daily commuting conditions.
Improved gradeability is another key focus area. The scooter is designed to handle inclines such as flyovers and hilly roads more effectively, addressing a common limitation seen in lower-priced electric two-wheelers.
Lower Running Costs and Practical Features
Greaves Electric Mobility states that the new model is intended to reduce total ownership costs when compared to petrol-powered alternatives. The company estimates that running costs could be up to 50 percent lower, primarily due to lower electricity expenses and reduced maintenance requirements associated with electric vehicles.
The scooter will support home charging and is expected to include practical features such as reverse mode, which can assist riders while manoeuvring in tight parking spaces.
Software-Defined Architecture and Connectivity
The Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter will be built as a software-defined vehicle. It is expected to support Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, allowing software upgrades without requiring visits to service centres. The scooter will also incorporate connected features enabled by artificial intelligence and machine learning, along with remote diagnostics to monitor vehicle health and performance.
Expanding the Ampere Portfolio
With the introduction of the 6th Gen model, Greaves Electric Mobility aims to broaden the Ampere lineup to cater to a wider range of customers, including first-time EV buyers seeking petrol-like performance at an accessible price point.
The company states that more than three lakh Ampere vehicles are currently operating on Indian roads, supported by over 400 service touchpoints nationwide. The upcoming launch forms part of its broader strategy to expand its electric two-wheeler presence in the domestic market.
Vikas Singh, Managing Director and Chief Financial Officer, Greaves Electric Mobility said, “The sub-Rs 1 lakh category represents the single largest volume opportunity in India’s scooter market, yet remains ICE-led. With Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter, we are entering the E2W market with a clear sight of competing with the largest selling ICE product offering, enhancing green mobility, and improved software integration. It also reflects our focus on disciplined growth, building scale in high-volume segments with products that are commercially sustainable and engineered for real-world Indian usage.”
