EV Market Penetration 8.5% of Passenger Vehicle Sales
Electric vehicles accounted for 8.5% of all passenger vehicles sold in India in September 2026. Put simply, one out of every 12 newly sold cars in the country is an electric car.
This impressive feat was enabled by early festive season demand. Increased variety of electric sport utility vehicles, enhanced charging infrastructure and growing consumer confidence in electric mobility solutions.
The Significance of September 2026
September was the fourth straight month when sales of electric cars exceeded 30,000. Indicating the sustainability of demand rather than just a temporary surge. Thanks to Tata domination, rapid expansion of Mahindra. Increased volumes at VinFast and breakthrough of Kia, India’s electric passenger car market becomes more and more competitive.
ELCTRIK Speaks
India’s record 36,108-unit electric car sales in September 2026 show that EVs are no longer a niche choice but a fast-growing mainstream segment. Tata continued leadership is impressive, but Mahindra’s rapid rise proves that strong electric SUVs can challenge the market leader. Meanwhile, VinFast, Kia and Tesla are adding healthy competition, which should ultimately benefit buyers through better products and pricing. The real test now will be sustaining this festive-season momentum beyond October. If affordability, charging access and new launches continue improving. India’s electric car market could scale even faster in the coming quarters.
