BYD has confirmed that the Seal U plug-in hybrid SUV will be launched in India, marking the company's entry into the country's plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle segment. Expected to arrive before the end of 2026, the Seal U will become the first plug-in hybrid model in BYD's Indian portfolio.
The SUV uses the company's DM-i hybrid technology, pairing an 18.3 kWh battery pack with two electric motors and a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine.
BYD Seal U PHEV: Claimed Range And Electric-Only Capability
According to BYD, the Seal U offers a combined driving range of more than 1,200 km on a full battery charge and fuel tank. The SUV is also claimed to deliver up to 70 km of electric-only driving range before the petrol engine is required.
The setup is designed to allow short daily commutes to be completed primarily on electric power while retaining the flexibility of a conventional fuel-powered vehicle for longer journeys.
BYD Seal U PHEV: Powertrain And Hybrid System
The Seal U is powered by BYD's DM-i plug-in hybrid system. In regular driving conditions, the electric motors handle most propulsion duties, while the petrol engine mainly functions as a generator to charge the battery.
Depending on driving conditions and power demand, the system can operate in electric, series-hybrid and parallel-hybrid modes. The transitions between these modes take place automatically.
BYD states that the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine achieves a thermal efficiency of 43.04 per cent. The company also claims the electric motors operate at an efficiency of up to 97.5 per cent.
BYD Seal U PHEV: Fuel Consumption And Battery Technology
The automaker claims a fuel consumption figure of 4.8 litres per 100 km under standard testing conditions. The Seal U uses BYD's Blade Battery technology, based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry. The same battery architecture is used in several BYD electric vehicles sold globally. The SUV also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, enabling the battery pack to supply power to external devices and appliances.
Expanding BYD's Presence In India
BYD currently sells fully electric passenger vehicles in India, including the Atto 3, Seal sedan and eMAX 7 MPV. The addition of the Seal U will expand the company's lineup into the plug-in hybrid segment. The launch will place BYD in a market where hybrid vehicles are gaining acceptance, while plug-in hybrid offerings remain relatively limited compared to conventional hybrids and battery electric vehicles.
Elctrik Speaks
The Seal U's India launch signals BYD's intention to participate in multiple electrified vehicle segments rather than focusing solely on battery electric vehicles. As charging infrastructure continues to expand, plug-in hybrids may serve as an alternative for buyers seeking electric driving capability for daily use while retaining the convenience of a petrol-powered backup for longer trips.
