BYD has filed a design patent in India for the Leopard 8 SUV. The application was submitted on September 30, 2024, and received approval on April 24, 2026. The model is sold in international markets under different sub-brands, including Fangchengbao and Denza. The Leopard 8 is a body-on-frame SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and is positioned as a three-row vehicle.
BYD Leopard 8 PHEV: Exterior Design and Dimensions
The design patent shows a production-spec model already available in global markets. The SUV has a boxy shape and measures 5,195mm in length, 1,994mm in width and 1,905mm in height, with a 2,920mm wheelbase. Its size is comparable to the Land Rover Defender 110.
At the front, the SUV features rectangular headlamps connected by a slim LED strip above a multi-slat grille. The bumper includes cladding and a skid plate. The patent also shows roof-mounted LiDAR sensors, indicating the presence of an advanced driver assistance system.
The side profile includes large wheels, squared cladding, blacked-out pillars and retractable door handles. At the rear, the SUV gets a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, rectangular tail lamps and a flat rear glass design.
BYD Leopard 8 PHEV: Interior and Features
The cabin layout includes three displays: a 12.3-inch driver screen, a 17.3-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch passenger display. The dashboard is paired with a four-spoke steering wheel.
Other elements include wireless charging pads, a gear selector on the centre console, storage space and physical controls. The SUV also offers features such as ambient lighting, automatic parking assist and an 18-speaker audio system. Depending on the market, the Leopard 8 is offered in 6-seat and 7-seat layouts, with a 5-seat version available in China.
BYD Leopard 8 PHEV: Powertrain and Performance
The Leopard 8 uses a plug-in hybrid setup combining a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, a 36.8kWh battery and dual electric motors. The combined output is rated at 748hp and 760Nm, with power sent to all four wheels through an automatic transmission.
The SUV has a claimed electric-only range of 100km (WLTP), while the total driving range is stated at up to 1,200km under CLTC testing standards. The claimed 0-100kph acceleration time is 4.8 seconds.
Elctrik Speaks
The design patent filing suggests that BYD is evaluating the Indian market for a larger plug-in hybrid SUV. While a patent does not confirm a launch, it indicates early-stage groundwork. If introduced, the Leopard 8 would enter a niche segment with limited direct competition in the plug-in hybrid off-road category.
