Standard Covers Higher Ethanol Fuel Blends
The newly established standard applies to ethanol-blended petrol fuels with ethanol concentrations ranging from 22 percent to 30 percent. According to the notification, the standard came into effect on May 15, 2026.
The move comes as India continues to expand the use of ethanol-blended fuels as part of its broader fuel diversification and emission reduction efforts.
Revised Standard for DME-Blended LPG
BIS has also introduced IS 18698:2026 for Dimethyl Ether (DME) blended Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The revised standard replaces IS 18698:2024 related to 20 percent DME blended LPG specification. The earlier version will remain valid until November 15, 2026.
Other Standards Included in Notification
The notification also includes standards related to probabilistic risk assessment for nuclear power plants, clothianidin technical specification, and shoe polishing brushes.
Elctrik Speaks
The notification indicates continued regulatory work around alternative fuel blends and updated fuel quality specifications in India. Standards for higher ethanol blends and DME-based LPG could support future fuel compatibility, testing and supply chain alignment across the automotive and energy sectors.
