Ather PMC Partnership
Road conditions could be evaluated through the daily use of scooters in Pune soon enough. Ather Energy and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) signed a one-year partnership agreement. To utilize data from smart electric scooters for maintaining roads and infrastructure planning. It involves Ather’s Pothole+ Alerts feature that identifies potholes, damaged patches and uneven areas across the city.
The concept is simple: data that can be obtained from rides may provide the municipal corporation an additional tool for detecting road defects, determining which sections require fixing and monitoring recurring issues.

What Is Included in the Ather-PMC Agreement?
According to the memorandum of understanding, Ather will provide PMC with agreed road impediment data. The corporation can then apply these insights to make decisions along with ground inspections. The scope includes more than just the detection of individual potholes but analysis of where road defects arise or reappear.
The collaboration has three core aims:
- Locate areas with potholes, road surface damage, and road bumps.
- Assist PMC in their maintenance prioritisation process.
- Identify recurring faults that might require further investigation and repairs.
For commuters, the difference is crucial. Spotting one damaged spot is one thing. But knowing that the area is consistently problematic could give city officials clues about which areas to focus on. This kind of analysis is one of the stated goals of the collaboration.
Ravneet S. Phokela, Chief Business Officer, Ather Energy Limited, said: “As cities grow, technology and data will play an increasingly important role in how we plan and maintain urban infrastructure. At Ather, our connected fleet gives us an opportunity to generate insights into road conditions across everyday routes. Through our partnership with Pune Municipal Corporation, we will be sharing these insights to support the corporation’s efforts in identifying road impediments and planning repairs. We see this as an important step towards using connected technology not just to improve the riding experience, but also to contribute to safer roads and more effective urban infrastructure planning.”
How Pothole+ Alerts works?
Everyday Commutes Provide Data for Road Conditions
The Pothole+ Alerts service relies on inputs collected through Ather's connected scooters during their commutes. The technology collects the data to detect road obstacles and inform riders about rough road conditions. It will provide the same functionality to civic maintenance planners via the PMC collaboration.
This feature runs on AtherStack 7 and offers in-navigation alerts of rough patches on the road to avoid rough rides, and it also suggests smooth routes. This partnership expands the application of this feature and adds the fleet-generated data as another source of information for the body charged with the responsibility of maintaining the roads in Pune.
Information Will Work Hand in Hand With On-Ground Inspections
The information generated by scooters is not being used as a replacement for inspections on the ground. Rather, the two organizations have come up with a model in which they blend the information generated from the connected vehicle with physical inspections on the ground. This makes it clear that the technology can be used to identify areas that may require inspection, while still complementing the process of the corporation.
Naval Kishore Ram, IAS, Municipal Commissioner, Pune said: “Timely identification of road defects is important for effective road maintenance and commuter safety. The data shared through this collaboration will provide an additional input for identifying stretches that require attention, prioritising repairs and monitoring recurring road impediments. We look forward to exploring how technology-led insights can complement our existing processes and support efforts to improve Pune’s road infrastructure.”
Pune Citizens Should Be Aware
This announcement provides the format to share information but does not give any published repair schedule. The announcement does not provide any details about the number of roads to be included in the process, the timeline to rectify the flagged areas, and the priority areas.
Key points:
- Duration: This partnership lasts for one year.
- Coverage: The agreement includes data regarding the impediment in the roadways in Pune.
- Purpose: The information will be used for prioritizing the repairs.
ELCTRIK Speaks
The collaboration between the Ather and PMC is definitely an encouraging move towards informed road maintenance in Pune. But the real challenge would be to see whether this collaborative information leads to timely and sustainable maintenance. Technology is supposed to hold people accountable, not make yet another announcement to the commuters about their woes. It is supposed to result in better roads and smoother travel, rather than just identification of potholes.
