The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has completed its first Euro NCAP Far-Side Sled Test in India, expanding its vehicle safety testing capabilities in line with the latest Euro NCAP 2026 protocols.

The development was announced by ARAI through its official LinkedIn handle. The organisation stated that it now offers the complete range of NCAP sled test evaluations, including Knee Mapping, Vehicle Test Configuration (VTC), Whiplash and Far-Side tests.

What the Far-Side Sled Test Evaluates

The Euro NCAP Far-Side Sled Test is designed to assess occupant protection during side-impact crashes where passengers move towards the opposite side of the cabin. The test studies the performance of seats, seatbelts, airbags and occupant restraint systems under simulated crash conditions.

The evaluation is part of the updated Euro NCAP 2026 safety framework, which focuses on reducing injuries during severe side collisions. Centre airbags and seat structures are among the key safety components assessed during the test.

Local Testing Support for Automakers

With the addition of the Far-Side Sled Test capability, ARAI said manufacturers can now conduct multiple Euro NCAP-related sled tests within India instead of relying on overseas testing facilities.

According to the organisation, the testing setup is supported by in-house computer-aided engineering (CAE) capabilities that allow simulation, validation and physical testing at a single location.

ARAI also stated that the capability aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Design and Validate in India’ initiative and could help reduce development time and testing costs for manufacturers developing vehicles for domestic and export markets.

Expanding Vehicle Safety Testing Infrastructure

The addition of Euro NCAP 2026-compliant Far-Side Sled Test capability comes at a time when global vehicle safety standards are becoming more stringent. The new infrastructure is expected to support automakers in validating crash safety systems and preparing future products for international safety requirements.

The addition of Euro NCAP Far-Side Sled Test capability at ARAI reflects the growing focus on advanced occupant safety validation in India. As vehicle safety requirements continue to evolve globally, local availability of such testing infrastructure could help manufacturers reduce dependence on overseas facilities while accelerating product development and validation processes.
