Amazon India has reported a two-fold year-on-year increase in two-wheeler sales on its platform, with demand increasingly originating from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. The company said customers from smaller cities are purchasing a wider range of vehicles, including premium motorcycles and electric two-wheelers, through its online marketplace.

The platform currently offers two-wheelers from more than 20 brands across commuter, premium and electric segments through a network of over 3,000 OEM-authorised dealers.

Premium Models See Higher Demand

According to Amazon India, the average value of a two-wheeler purchased on the platform has crossed ₹1 lakh, indicating a shift towards higher-priced models. Premium motorcycle sales increased nearly five times year-on-year, while commuter motorcycles more than doubled during the same period. Internal combustion engine (ICE) scooter sales grew by around 1.5 times.

In the electric two-wheeler category, more than half of customer demand was concentrated in the ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh price bracket, suggesting growing interest in mid-range EV offerings.

Smaller Cities Lead Online Purchases

Amazon India stated that nearly two-thirds of its two-wheeler customers now come from Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. The share is higher in the electric two-wheeler category, where seven out of ten buyers are located outside major metropolitan markets.

Among the cities recording significant growth in bookings were Kakinada, Tirupati and Nellore in southern India, while Nagaur, Jind, Jamnagar, Bilaspur, Rajkot, Purnia and Samastipur also registered strong increases in demand over the past year.

The company further noted that customers from more than 2,300 Tier 3 towns purchased a two-wheeler through Amazon.in for the first time during the last 12 months.

Online Buying Process Gains Acceptance

Amazon's two-wheeler marketplace allows customers to compare models, view ex-showroom prices based on location, read customer reviews and complete payments online. The company stated that all participating dealers on the platform are authorised by vehicle manufacturers and that purchases are backed by standard manufacturer warranties.

AI Tools Support Purchase Decisions

The company highlighted the use of AI-based tools to assist customers researching vehicle purchases online. These include Rufus, Amazon's AI shopping assistant, LensAI for image-based searches, and Review Summaries that condense customer feedback into key points.

Amazon said these tools are being used to help customers compare specifications, understand ownership experiences and evaluate options across different brands and fuel types.

Elctrik Speaks

The latest data highlights how online channels are gradually becoming part of the vehicle purchase journey, particularly in smaller cities where physical access to multiple dealerships and brands may be limited. The strong contribution from Tier 2 and Tier 3 markets also reflects the broader decentralisation of demand across India's two-wheeler sector. For electric two-wheelers, the growing share of buyers outside metropolitan areas suggests that EV adoption is increasingly expanding beyond traditional urban centres.
