As per government data, 13,800 electric buses have been allocated under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme as on 10 March 2026. The allocation covers seven cities, with Bengaluru receiving the highest share at 4,500 buses, followed by Delhi with 2,800 and Hyderabad with 2,200 buses.


Other cities included in the allocation are Mumbai (1,500 buses), Ahmedabad (1,200 buses), Pune (1,000 buses), and Surat (600 buses). The allocation has been divided into two phases, with 10,900 buses under Phase I and 2,900 buses under Phase II.


Cities Not Included in Allocation

No allocation has been made for Chennai and Kolkata under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, as no proposals or demand were received from these cities.


Tendering and Deployment Status

The tender process for Phase I has been completed, while the tender for Phase II has been issued. Deployment of buses is to be carried out by State Transport Undertakings after signing agreements and receiving vehicle supplies from manufacturers. As of 12 March 2026, no buses have been deployed under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme.


Context: Earlier E-Bus Deployment Under FAME-II

Under the FAME-II scheme, 6,862 electric buses have already been sanctioned. Deployment has taken place across multiple states and cities, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune and others.


Additional Government Programmes

The government is also implementing the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme to support deployment of 10,000 electric buses in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.


In addition, financial support has been allocated for EV charging infrastructure, with ₹2,000 crore earmarked for public charging stations, although no expenditure had been reported as of 11 March 2026.
