The MG Motor has unveiled its all-electric SUV, the MG ES5. In a dynamic new product launch event held on October 15, 2024, in Shanghai. This new and bold stage of the brand’s electric vehicle journey will see the ES5 take the wheel from the popular model, the MG ZS EV in markets such as China and possibly India. The MG ES5 is going to captivate a hungry global audience looking for affordable electric mobility solutions.
Forging the MG ES5 on the Nebula Platform
One of the features that stand out is the fact that it will be built on the all-new Nebula platform from SAIC. This is specifically designed for electric vehicles, with better space utilization, more energy efficiency, and superior driving dynamics. ES5 unlike the outgoing MG ZS EV, would be larger to offer an added dimension of comfort on the inside. It is roomy enough for families or anyone who wishes to enjoy the luxury of interior space in a compact electric SUV. MG ES5 with the rear-mounted electric motor, offers 167 hp and 250 Nm of torque. That served the SUV well. It can go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds with a top speed of 170 km/h.
Battery Specifications of MG ES5
The MG ES5 comes with two battery options:
- 49.1 kWh battery with a range of 425
- 62.2 kWh battery with a range of 525
The MG ES5 is multi-faceted and provides options available in the batteries that best suit the lifestyle needs and usages of the buyers. Whether it is to travel long distances or for daily commutes, the ES5 offers a range that competes well in its class.
A Bold Modern Design
Design influence comes from the hatchback MG4 and the roadster Cyberster. This gives the MG ES5 sharp LED headlights and dynamic lines. The ES5 features its digital instrument cluster alongside a large infotainment screen for an immersive, tech-forward experience. The cabin is focused on the floating center console replete with wireless charging so that the ES5 is as much about performance but also full of the latest features.
“The MG ES5 represents our promise of delivering futuristic electric mobility without sacrificing practicality. We believe it is going to resonate with those who want edge-cutting technology at affordable prices,” says Rajesh Gupta, Head of Marketing at MG India.
Pricing and Market Expectations Of MG ES5
The MG ES5 is said to be priced around 100,000 yuan – 150,000 yuan in China (₹11.83 lakh to ₹17.72 lakh). When it comes to markets like India, one can expect the price to be elevated due to import duties and taxes. Industry experts predict an Indian launch sometime during mid-2025, although the dates haven’t been released.
ES5 will have an incredible competition with electric SUVs like Hyundai Kona Electric and Volvo EX30. But the new strategy by MG, which is going to integrate high-quality features with competitive pricing may be what helps it make enough market share.
ELCTRIK Speaks
One of the most significant milestones that would cement MG Motor’s existence in its fight to dominate a more considerable share of the increasingly expanding electric SUV market is the launch of MG ES5. The ES5 fits the bill when it comes to meeting all the needs that consumers have long had for an electric car.
