Key Highlights:
- MG Cloud EV teased for the first time
- Likely to be priced at Rs 20.0 lakh (ex-showroom)
- To be launched this festive-season
- To act as a premium alternative to the Tata Nexon EV
MG’s forthcoming EV in India, once speculated to be a rebranded version of the Wuling Cloud EV from SAIC’s subsidiary, is now confirmed to be that very model, as JSW-MG Motors reveals a teaser for their third electric vehicle for the first time. MG has now intimated that the arrival of the Indian-spec model crossover utility vehicle (CUV) is anticipated around the festive season, subsequent to the unveiling of the initial teaser.
While MG hasn’t featured the Cloud EV in the video, the first teaser showcases key elements of its exterior design. The front will sport connected LED daytime running lights (DRLs) with headlights on either side, similar to the global-spec model, and the MG logo centrally positioned below the day-time-running-light (DRLs).
Additionally, the teaser offered a detailed view of the aerodynamically-designed alloy wheels, resembling those of the international model but featuring the MG logo at the center. Further details observed encompass a two-spoke, flat-bottom multi-functional steering wheel and a panoramic sunroof.
The cabin might retain the black theme with bronze accents like the global-spec model and could feature black leatherette upholstery. Internationally, it boasts a 15.6-inch free-floating infotainment system, an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, a 6-way powered driver seat, automatic climate control with rear air-con vents and a wireless phone charger.
For safety, it’s likely to boast 6 airbags (up from the 4 on the international model), electronic stability control (ESC), a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), an electronic parking brake and a 360-degree camera. MG may also add advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking.
The Cloud EV in the Indonesian market features a front-axle single electric motor based front-wheel drive (FWD), powered by a 50.6 kWh battery pack that offers an impressive range of 460 km (CLTC). However, the Indian version is expected to have a different range, as it will be tested according to ARAI standards.
The upcoming CUV from MG India can be charged from 30-100 percent in about 30 minutes using a DC fast charger, while a home AC charger can recharge the battery from 20-100 percent in approximately 7 hours.
Elctrik Speaks:
The MG Cloud EV, initially expected to enter the Compact SUV segment, is likely to be positioned in the sub-compact SUV category instead, with a price tag under Rs 20.0 lakh (ex-showroom).
This will mark JSW-MG Motors’ entry into the sub-compact SUV market with an electric powertrain, offering a premium alternative to models like the Tata Nexon EV and Mahindra XUV 400 EL Pro Max. The Cloud EV will be positioned between the Comet EV and the ZS EV in MG India’s electric lineup. Its debut in the mid-range market is set to attract a broad consumer base, potentially boosting sales and volume.
