Key Highlights:
- $2.65 million investment in JOULE for shared EV charging stations in Bengaluru.
- By 2030, the project will save 11.2 million liters of petrol and prevent 25,700 metric tons of CO2 emissions.
- 9,500 EVs will be supported by the charging network, with 5,500 EVs in Bengaluru by 2030.
- The initiative will help Bengaluru achieve 100% EVs for three-wheelers, cabs, and corporate fleets by 2030.
Global Optimism’s co-founded initiative, “The Climate Pledge,” will receive $2.65 million in investments. Major contributors include Amazon, Mahindra Logistics, Uber, HCLTech, and Magenta Mobility. The funds will support the new shared EV charging station project, JOULE (Joint Operation Unifying Last-mile Electrification), in Bengaluru.
Significant Environmental and Economic Impact by 2030
By 2030, the JOULE initiative is projected to make a substantial environmental impact. The project is expected to save over 11.2 million liters of petrol and prevent about 25,700 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Charging stations will provide around 22,700 megawatt-hours of electricity while adding 6.2 megawatts of renewable energy capacity. Moreover, this initiative will create approximately 185 permanent jobs by 2030.
Capacity to Support 9,500 EVs
The JOULE project will have the capacity to serve 9,500 EVs by 2030. It is expected to support more than 5,500 EVs in Bengaluru based on increased demand. Currently, Doddakallasandra has become Bengaluru’s first EV charging station fulfilling daily charging needs. Five additional charging stations are expected to be constructed by the end of this year.
Support for India’s EV Transition
Sally Fouts, Global Leader of The Climate Pledge, emphasized the initiative’s alignment with Bengaluru’s goal of achieving 100% EV usage for three-wheelers, cabs, and corporate fleets by 2030. This effort supports India’s broader transition to electric vehicles.
Amazon’s Role in EV Adoption
Amazon has actively contributed to The Climate Pledge’s objective to boost EV infrastructure. Abhinav Singh, VP of Operations at Amazon India, stated, “JOULE helps us reach our goal of deploying 10,000 EVs in India by 2025.” Amazon operates over 7,300 EVs in India and aims to collaborate with manufacturers and service providers to accelerate EV adoption.
The Karnataka government has also supported this initiative, highlighting the potential of public-private partnerships in advancing India’s sustainable future.
Key Contributors: Kazam, Greenko, and Deloitte
Kazam, an India-based EV charging platform, will be pivotal in expanding the charging station network. Additionally, Greenko, a renewable energy supplier, and Deloitte, a strategic consulting partner, will play crucial roles in the initiative’s success.
