Key Highlights
For brands like Royal Enfield that are known for their traditional motorcycles, getting into the electric vehicle game opens up a whole new world of opportunities and challenges. Even though Royal Enfield is a major player in the middleweight motorcycle market, they’re also working hard on creating a new lineup of electric bikes. The first one is set to be revealed at the EICMA 2024
They’ve just given us a sneak peek of their upcoming electric motorcycle with the message “Save the Date” for November 4, 2024. They’ve also launched a new Instagram account (@royalenfieldev) and a website section dedicated to their electric motorcycles (https://www.royalenfield.com/in/en/electric-vehicles/).
Royal Enfield’s new electric motorcycle is all set to change urban commuting as we know it. They’re blending their classic style with modern tech to create a whole new riding experience for city life. The teaser shows off this cool new electric bike that’s made for city riding – it’s smooth, connected, and super easy to handle. This marks Royal Enfield’s big step into the electric future, all while keeping the classic vibe that riders have loved for over a hundred years.
Royal Enfield isn’t rushing to release these electric bikes. They want to make sure they’re something special that riders will be excited about. The launch is expected in 2025. And just like their current bikes, there will be a bunch of different electric Royal Enfield bikes to choose from in the future.
Royal Enfield’s New Electric Motorcycle
Royal Enfield is working on two different EV platforms to get better results. One of them is being made entirely in-house, while the other is a collaboration with a European startup called Stark Future. Royal Enfield had invested in Stark Future in 2022, buying a 10.35% stake for €50 million (Rs 439 crore).
This partnership involves R&D, technical licensing, technology sharing, and manufacturing. They’re developing several new EV products, and one has already moved past the prototype stage. To keep costs down and deal with supply chain issues, Royal Enfield plans to use local suppliers as much as possible and has already made deals with 11-12 EV vendors. They’ll only import parts if they can’t find them locally.
When it comes to distribution, Royal Enfield is considering different options and might even open new outlets just for EVs. They’re also putting together a strong team for their EV business, with recent hires including former Ducati veteran Mario Alvisi and ex-Ola Electric official Umesh Krishnappa.
Royal Enfield’s Silent Shift
It’s hard to picture Royal Enfield bikes without that classic thumping exhaust sound, but the electric versions will be completely silent. Royal Enfield isn’t even thinking about using speakers because it would feel fake. The thumping sound is natural for Royal Enfield’s ICE motorcycles, and it’s part of the bike’s rythm. It wouldn’t feel the same if they used speakers for the electric bikes. Even though Royal Enfield is working on electric bikes, they’re going to keep manufacture ICE motorcycles for few decades as long as regulations allow.
It’s exciting to see Royal Enfield venturing into the electric vehicle market. Their commitment to maintaining the classic style while integrating modern technology into their electric bikes is commendable. The collaboration with Stark Future and the emphasis on utilizing local suppliers for production are positive steps that can contribute to sustainable and cost-effective manufacturing.ELCTRIK Speaks
