Mahindra & Mahindra launched state-of-the-art EV manufacturing and battery assembly facilities at Chakan plant located in Pune, Maharashtra, today, January 8. This also marks the fruition of Mahindra’s sincere commitment to help the industry’s electrification pathway towards sustainable mobility, as expressed in its more ambitious plans in investing ₹16,000 crores in its EV development across 2022-2027.
Mahindra Driving India’s EV Revolution
It stands as a centerpiece of Mahindra’s vision to dominate India’s growing market for electric vehicles. The EV plant has 90,000 unit annual production capacities and can grow up to an annual production rate of 120,000. India’s need for electric cars is increasing swiftly with the assistance given by the Government in the form of incentives and the growing sensitivity of consumers about the environment is changing in support of green mobility.
Veejay Ram Nakra, President Automotive Business at Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, at the launch ceremony, mentioned, “This is not just about manufacturing; this is about creating a sustainable future. Our aim is to deliver world-class electric SUVs that meet the emerging requirements of our customers while minimizing the environmental footprint.”
Advanced Manufacturing for a Greener Tomorrow
Mahindra’s Chakan facility sets benchmarks in the industry for automotive manufacturing. The company has more than 1,000 robots and AI-driven systems there, enhancing production precision and efficiency. The flexibility of the assembly lines allows quick adaptation to trends in the marketplace and changing preferences of consumers. The plant is in-house, and manufacturing includes cell-through-module packing. This brings with it complete control of the quality, lower costs, and higher vehicle performance.
Sustainability Lies at the Core
Mahindra’s plant in Chakan showcases its commitment to sustainable practices. Entirely run by renewable energy sources, the same plant is also a water-positive one and is expected to help achieve India’s climate targets set out in COP 26. Mahindra is promoting diversity and strives to reach 25% of its workforce’s gender diversity, which is considered a very forward-thinking step for an industry led by men in the past.
