Key Highlights
On Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, JLR announced the launch of its latest Open Innovation Hub in Bangalore. This hub will work closely with startups to create new products and services that will shape the future experiences of JLR’s customers.
This new hub in India will be the fifth of its kind, following the success of similar hubs in the UK, US, Israel, and Brazil. The India Hub will focus on advanced technology such as artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of Things, advanced driver assistance systems, and sensors and devices.
The goal is to bring together various parties including industry experts, government officials, and academic institutions to develop cutting-edge solutions for JLR. These solutions may include optimizing batteries for electric cars, finding the best locations for charging stations, and enhancing advanced driver assistance systems.
Since the launch of JLR’s Open Innovation Programme in April 2022, the company has engaged with over 2,500 startups globally, resulting in 33 formal collaborations. Some of the successful collaborations include working with a UK startup called Allye to develop a way to reuse JLR’s hybrid and electric vehicle batteries for energy storage, and supporting a Brazilian startup called Energy Source to launch the first solar-powered electric vehicle charging station. Additionally, JLR has partnered with vehicle rental specialist Movida to offer mobility leasing options for over 250 vehicles from JLR brands.
Igor Murakami, JLR’S Innovation Director, emphasized that India’s fast-growing startup industry, JLR’s existing presence, and strong ties to the Tata Group make the country the perfect place for the newest Innovation Hub. By working with talented people and new technologies from around the world, JLR’s Open Innovation Programme is helping us stay ahead. Setting up a Hub in India will help JLR’s engineering teams come up with new ideas more quickly to improve vehicle design and features and ensure great customer experiences.
The focus on advanced technology such as artificial intelligence, big data, and advanced driver assistance systems shows that JLR is proactive in embracing cutting-edge solutions. The success stories of collaborations with startups, such as reusing hybrid and electric vehicle batteries for energy storage and launching solar-powered electric vehicle charging stations, highlight the tangible impact of this initiative.ELCTRIK Speaks
