In cold weather, the chemical reactions within the battery slow down, a factor that decreases the efficiency and, consequently, the driving range. On the other hand, high temperatures can overheat; this too can lower battery performance and life. To counteract some of these effects, EV owners can precondition their vehicles while still plugged in to ensure that the battery is at an optimal temperature before beginning a trip.

Urban vs. Rural Driving
The environment in which an EV is driven, urban or rural, also goes a long way in determining its range. The style of urban driving often involves stops, traffic lights, and generally slower speeds that increase energy consumption, whereas cities have a much larger density of charging stations. EV drivers might have a nightmare in rural areas. While highway driving is generally more efficient because of fewer stops, the sparsity of charging stations creates range anxiety.
