BMTC E-Expansion: Bengaluru’s push for clean mobility achieved a milestone on July 11, 2025. Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) launched 148 new non-AC electric buses. Cementing its resolve towards a green and contemporary public transportation system. This addition forms part of the BMTC plan to make Bengaluru’s bus fleet the largest e-bus fleet. With the target of having 1,779 electric buses by the year-end.
“BMTC’s extended e-bus operations are a step in the direction of environmentally friendly. Public transport and curbing vehicular pollution in Bengaluru.” Said State Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy. Attended the flag-off ceremony at Shanthinagar.
BMTC E-Expansion: Key Details and Features
Supplier and Deployment:
- The 148 buses were provided by Tata Motors’ TML Smart City Mobility Solutions Ltd. Under a continuing top-up order. With all units running under the Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model for 12 years. At ₹41.01/km (inclusive of cost of electricity).
- These buses are operated and based out of Depot-4 (Jayanagar). They have been running new express services and package tours since July 12.
Technical Specifications
- Each 12-metre bus is equipped with a 298 kWh battery. Providing an approved range of 200 km per charge.
- 35 seats and a single wheelchair space cater to capacity. Facilitating accessibility through a kneeling device and fold-down ramp.
Safety & Passenger Comfort:
- There are 10 panic buttons provided on each bus (highlighting women’s safety). Three onboard cameras and a reversing camera. Fire and alarm systems, and vehicle location monitoring.
- Passenger-friendly options are low-floor boarding, automated voice messages. LED display boards, and stop-request buttons.
- Pneumatic doors are locked during operation for increased safety.
- Regenerative braking is enhanced to improve energy efficiency.
- Extra charging points have been provided at major BMTC terminals. Like Kempegowda, Shivajinagar, Bannerghatta TTMC, and more.
Environmental Impact
- Operation of these buses is pegged at reducing 2.07 lakh kg of CO₂ emissions. Conserving close to 77,000 litres of diesel daily. Bengaluru’s war against air pollution.
BMTC E-Expansion and Future Plans
BMTC’s e-mobility transformation is gaining speed:
- The total e-bus fleet in BMTC is now 1,436 vehicles. With a staggered introduction of 195 more AC electric buses (through Ohm Global Mobility Ltd). It is in progress as part of a 320-bus order.
- As part of the PM E-Bus Sewa programme, another 4,500 electric buses (400 AC, 4,100 non-AC). They will be coming to Bengaluru as the city aims for a total fleet of over 10,000 buses. To cater to increased urban needs.
BMTC E-Expansion: Financial Support and Models
A grant of ₹39.08 lakh per bus has been given by the Directorate of Urban & Land Transport. The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). Allowing BMTC to ramp up e-bus adoption without placing an excessive burden on city finances.
