During its recent investor day, Stellantis announced plans for a new Jeep Renegade set to debut by 2027. While exact details were not revealed, it’s evident they’re working on a more affordable version using Citroen’s CMP platform, known from their C3 cars in India. This shift aims to cut costs compared to the originally planned STLA Small platform.
The upcoming Renegade will also include an electric model priced under USD 25,000 (around Rs 20.8 Lakh), emphasizing affordability and maintaining the essential 4×4 capability that defines Jeep vehicles. Modifications to the CMP platform, called the Smart Car Platform for electric cars, will enable this 4×4 feature. Sharing this platform with Citroen is expected to drive down costs for important components like powertrain and electronics.
Technology:
Sources indicate, that the updated architecture of the next generation Jeep Renegade will likely include upgrades to support key Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) features, which will be a part of EV version as well. These upgrades are in line with the increasing demand for such technology in the rapidly evolving Indian market.
Powertrain:
The electric Renegade will likely feature a powertrain and battery system derived from Citroen’s EV models, such as the electric versions of the Citroen C3. This typically, includes a compact electric motor and a battery pack designed for efficiency and urban driving. Specific details about the power output and battery capacity haven’t been disclosed yet.
By leveraging Citroen’s existing EV technology, the Jeep Renegade can offer a competitive and efficient electric SUV option while maintaining the essential off-road mechanism.
In terms of its launch in India, where market preferences vary, the new Renegade based EV on the CMP platform could provide a viable alternative distinct from the current Compass model and introduction of Jeep India into EV category. This move underscores Stellantis’s ongoing investment in India, recognizing its strategic importance beyond the USA.
Based on, similar dimensions of the current Jeep Renegade, there is already an EV existing in International markets named, Avenger which is highly-unlikely to hit the Indian roads anytime soon.
In essence, the upcoming all-new Citroen CMP underpinned Jeep Renegade EV, blends cost effective engineering with the rugged versatility expected from Jeep, positioning itself well in both global and emerging markets. This Next Gen Renegade based EV will be an addition to the already existing four nameplates which are locally assembled in India, once launched.
