Kia EV9 India Launch Overview
Kia unveiled the EV9 earlier this month alongside the return of the Carnival MPV. With the EV9, Kia aims to tap into the premium vehicle market in India. This new offering is the company’s first luxury EV in the Indian market and demonstrates Kia’s commitment to expanding its EV lineup with high-end models.
The EV9 will only be available in a fully loaded GT-Line AWD trim, including all the advanced features Kia has to offer.
Retailing Only at Select Dealerships
Kia has decided to limit the availability of the EV9 to 20 select dealerships across the top 10 metro cities in India. This strategy aligns with Kia’s expectations that demand for the luxury electric SUV will primarily come from urban areas.
Additionally, the company has no official volume targets for the EV9. Instead, it plans to import units based on customer orders, with deliveries starting in March 2025.
Kia’s Future EV Plans
The launch of the EV9 is only the beginning of Kia’s plans for the Indian EV market. The company aims to introduce two locally produced EVs by 2026:
- Carens EV: Expected to launch in the second half of CY2025. It will offer a similar package as the ICE version but with an electric powertrain.
- Second Compact EV: Likely to be a Sonet EV or a new SUV, launching in CY2026.

Kia EV9 Specifications
The EV9 will feature a powerful AWD drivetrain and an extensive set of premium features under its GT-Line trim. While the technical specifications are yet to be revealed in detail, Kia aims to position the EV9 as a luxury three-row SUV with top-tier performance.
ELCTRIK Speaks
With the launch of the EV9, Kia has made a bold entry into the premium EV market in India. Limiting the availability to select dealerships and offering only a top-spec GT-Line AWD variant shows the brand’s focus on catering to a niche audience. The EV9 also paves the way for Kia’s future electric ventures, with two more locally manufactured EVs set to launch by 2026. Kia’s strategic move with the EV9 reflects its ambition to carve a strong position in India’s growing luxury EV segment.
