Tata Motors has made a significant move in its electric vehicle (EV) strategy by partnering with Octillion Power Systems, a Chinese battery pack manufacturer. This collaboration marks a departure from Tata’s previous approach of solely sourcing battery packs from Tata AutoComp Systems Ltd, its parent firm. The decision to work with an external battery provider aims to enhance the reliability and performance of Tata’s EVs, including the newly launched Curvv coupe SUV.
Shift in Battery Sourcing Strategy
For the first time since the launch of the Nexon EV in 2020, Tata Motors has chosen an external battery supplier. Octillion Power Systems, a California-based company with operations in both the US and India, will supply lithium-ion battery packs for the Curvv coupe SUV. This move reflects Tata Motors’ response to the challenges in the EV market, such as battery discharge issues in older models. By partnering with Octillion, Tata Motors seeks to diversify its battery sourcing and integrate new designs and technologies into its EV lineup.
Details of the Battery Partnership
The collaboration with Octillion involves the use of different battery packs for various models of the Curvv EV. For the 45kWh model, Tata Motors has selected battery packs from Octillion, which contain 15.2Ah cylindrical cells sourced from EVE, another Chinese company. These battery packs will be crucial in ensuring the reliability and performance of the Curvv EV.
Meanwhile, the larger 55kWh Curvv EV will continue to use battery packs from Tata AutoComp Systems. These packs are equipped with 105Ah prismatic cells supplied by Gotion, a Chinese lithium-ion cell manufacturer. Tata Motors has been using Gotion’s cells through a joint venture with Tata AutoComp for its passenger EVs until now.
Battery Pack Customization
The choice between cylindrical and prismatic cells for the Curvv EV is based on the specific requirements of the battery pack. Factors such as energy density, thermal management, and packaging flexibility play a role in determining the most suitable cell type for each battery pack.
Strategic Move for Supply Chain Stability
According to a Tata Motors representative cited by LiveMint, the company is adopting a multi-sourcing approach to mitigate supply chain risks. By reducing reliance on a single supplier, it aims to ensure a consistent and timely supply of parts for its EVs. This strategy is crucial given the rapid growth of EV sales, which have surged from around 6,000 units in FY21 to nearly 100,000 units in FY24.
