Key Highlights:
- India’s first 24-hour solar-powered EV charging hub is near Bengaluru Airport.
- It is equipped with 20 fast charging stations and 3 common points.
- Hub includes a 45 kW battery system storing solar energy for nighttime charging.
- Karnataka plans to install 2,500 EV charging stations across the state.
India’s first solar-powered EV charging hub is under construction near Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli, Bengaluru. This groundbreaking facility is set to be operational by the end of September. It will revolutionize how electric vehicles (EVs) are charged, offering a sustainable and continuous power supply round-the-clock.
Charging Capacity and Technology
This charging hub will feature 20 fast charging stations and three common charging points. The facility will allow 23 vehicles to charge simultaneously. On average, fast charging stations can recharge vehicles within 30 minutes to 1 hour, while common points will take longer. The project is a collaboration between GIZ and Noonam, integrating advanced charging technology.
Solar-Powered 24/7 Charging
The hub’s standout feature is its integrated solar power system, which includes two 45 kW batteries. These batteries store solar energy during the day, ensuring a steady power supply for charging EVs even at night. The facility will also utilize repurposed car batteries to store solar energy, enhancing sustainability.
A Response to Growing EV Demand
The rise in electric vehicle usage in Bengaluru and across Karnataka has driven the need for such infrastructure. Although the airport already has EV charging stations, they are limited to airport vehicles and private agencies. The new solar-powered hub aims to fill this gap by providing a quick and reliable charging solution for the thousands of vehicles visiting the airport daily.
Government’s Vision for EV Infrastructure
This project aligns with Karnataka’s broader initiative to promote electric vehicles. The state has an ambitious goal of installing 2,500 EV charging stations. The Devanahalli hub will serve as a model for future developments in charging infrastructure, supporting Karnataka’s leadership in EV adoption.
