India has initiated a historic endeavor to put up more than 72,300 public electric vehicle (EV) charging points. Across the country under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, marking a big drive towards green mobility. Rolled out on September 28, 2025. The initiative is aimed at pushing EV uptake by creating a rich, widespread charging network within the next two years.
PM E-DRIVE: India’s Charging Revolution
The PM E-DRIVE initiative will have 72,300 new charging stations. To be installed in metro cities, highways, public facilities, and busy areas. The project is to be funded by the Government of India with ₹2,000 crore. With the aim of filling gaps in existing infrastructure and promoting the growing EV industry.
- The charging stations will be fitted at airports, metro stations, expressway halts, railway stations, government offices, and housing estates.
- The initial phase concentrates on public sector areas and high-traffic corridors to achieve maximum coverage.
Major Subsidies and Implementation Plan
To facilitate quick deployment, the scheme provides liberal subsidies:
- 100% subsidy for installations at government offices, schools, and hospitals if they are kept open to the public.
- Maximum 80% subsidy for areas such as malls and transport centers, with 70% for hardware expenses.
- Battery swapping facilities also qualify for assistance, encouraging flexible, rapid recharging.
Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has also been entrusted with the role of nodal agency. For implementation and monitoring, including the creation of unified access applications for consumers.
Union Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy called the initiative “A transformation leap to clean, reliable, and affordable mobility for Indians.” The launch unites central and state authorities, private operators, and local authorities in a common mission.”
PM E-Drive: Impact on the EV Ecosystem
- The transition is anticipated to accelerate EV adoption. Decrease range anxiety, and increase domestic manufacturing of charging hardware.
- The expansion of charging helps India achieve its target of reaching net zero by 2070. Covering both city dwellers with short commutes and those traveling long distances.
ELCTRIK Speaks
This country-wide infrastructure surge under PM E-DRIVE. It is set to mainstream sustainable transport. Making charging as easy as refuelling and transforming India’s cityscape for the electric era.
