Xiaomi, the technology behemoth of smartphones and smart home gadgets. It has jumped once more into the electric vehicle (EV) arena. With the formal release of its inaugural SUV, the Xiaomi YU7. Last unveiled on May 22, 2025, the YU7 will start deliveries in July. It is already being compared to veteran competitors like the Tesla Model Y and BMW iX.
Design and Engineering: A Statement of Innovation
Pronounced “YU,” inspired by the Chinese phrase for “riding the wind.” The YU7 is Xiaomi’s second electric vehicle and its first designed specifically as an SUV. The vehicle’s dimensions 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height. With a 3,000 mm wheelbase give it a commanding road presence and a sleek, sporty silhouette.
Xiaomi YU7 Exterior highlights include:
- A 3.11 sq. meter aluminum clamshell hood of the largest mass-produced size. With an 141-liter front trunk and eight opening modes.
- Unique “waterdrop” headlamps with air channel hollows. Ultra-red halo rear lights for better nighttime visibility.
- Electric door handles with “Auto-Flush” for better aerodynamics and appearance.
- A drag coefficient of only 0.245, thanks to 10 air channels. 19 optimized vents, and an active grille with 100 movable louvers. Leading to a total of 59 km of additional range.
- The colors available are Emerald Green, Titanium Silver, and Lava Orange. All with the latest paint technology for a futuristic look.

The 0–100 km/h time and 690 PS output of the Max variant beat the Tesla Model Y. Which has 510 PS and a 0–100 km/h time of 3.7 seconds. The YU7 also holds the range lead, with the 835 km CLTC of the Standard model besting the competition in its segment.
The charging technology is no less impressive: the 800V silicon carbide architecture supports 5.2C fast charging. The YU7 can charge to 620 km in 15 minutes. Nearly twice as much as the Tesla Model Y can do in 15 minutes.
Xiaomi YU7 Interior and Technology: A New Standard for Smart Luxury
Inside, the YU7 features Xiaomi’s HyperVision panoramic head-up display. A triple Mini LED system that projects essential driving information onto the windshield. The cabin is designed for comfort and control. With heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic glass sunroof, and a 16.1-inch central touchscreen. Advanced driver assistance features include LiDAR. 3 mmWave radars, 11 cameras, and a suite of collision prevention and autonomous driving systems.
Xiaomi YU7 Market Position and Industry Response
Xiaomi’s entry into the luxury electric SUV segment is seen as a major challenge to established players. The YU7’s combination of design, performance, range, and technology positions.
